1. What is the difference between Ajax non-turn type zip gun chisels and turn-type chisels?

Ajax non-turn tools have four ball slots rather than a collar. This allows the balls in the retainer to seat into the slots, preventing the tool from turning. It also allows the tool to be indexed for different cutting positions. Non-turn chisels must be used with an Ajax Kwik Change Retainer, #3300 or #3700.

2. I have a Chicago Pneumatic model #715 air hammer. I want to buy a retainer for it. How do I know which one to buy?

Go to the top of the Ajax home page and click on "PRODUCTS". This will show you a list of various product categories. As the CP-715 is a zip gun, go to the box for Zip Gun Chisels & Accessories. Go to the box on the right and click on "Retainers & Retainer Springs". This will bring you to a page of retainers and other accessories. Scroll down until you come to the section titled "Retainer Order Information". Find Chicago Pneumatic and model #715 in the chart. This will tell you that the proper retainer for your hammer is either the #3300-9 or the #3300-U. Both of these retainers are described in detail if you scroll up on the page. Choose whichever you feel is best for you. If you do not find your hammer model in this chart, feel free to contact one of our Customer Service representatives and they will be happy to help you.

3. The shanks of my chisel keep breaking. What could be the cause of this problem and how can I prevent it from happening?

There are several reasons a tool may fail. Go to the Ajax home page and click on to "Customer Service". Scroll down this page and read the sections titled "Caution" and "Play It Safe". Most premature tool breakage is caused by improper use of the tool. However, if there is any doubt, please call us and we can arrange for you to send the tool back to us for inspection.

4. I saw your zip gun chisel #910-18 in the catalog. It looks like the right type of chisel, but I need one that is 24" long. Does Ajax make a tool like that?

This is not a stock item for Ajax, but we can make it. In fact, Ajax makes more custom designed tools than any other chisel manufacturer. Tell us what you need or send us a detailed drawing with all dimensions indicated and we will be glad to provide you with a quotation.

5. I have a chisel from one of your competitors. I want to buy the Ajax equivalent but I don't know the right number. How can I find it?

First, we want to congratulate you for switching to Ajax! On the Ajax home page, go to the Ajax Cross-Ref section and enter in the competitor's part number. If there is an equivalent Ajax number, you will automatically be taken to the page it is on. Scroll the page until you find the item with a flashing read line under it. This is the Ajax equivalent.

8. I need to replace some old chisels but I don't see any markings on them. Can you help me find the right chisels?
Normally, if you can answer the following 4 questions, we can get you the correct item:

  • What is the collar style (if applicable)?
  • What is the shank style?
  • What is the point style?
  • What is the length?

Try to get as much information as possible from your customer. The make and model of the hammer can also be useful in determining the proper chisel. In any event, our Customer Service staff will do everything in its power to assist you.

10. I love your "Chisel Man" logo. Does he have a name?

The Chisel Man has been around for about eight years now and we have often thought about naming him. Several ideas have been tossed around, but no name has ever been officially adopted. So for now, you can call him anything you want as long as you call Ajax for your chisel needs! Maybe down the road we'll have a contest to let our customers decide on a name. Keep watching our site.
